Financial Information

The Office of Academic Scholarships and Financial Aid provides a comprehensive program that includes a wide variety of merit-based and need-based scholarships, as well as grants, such as the TEG and Pell, loans, and part-time campus employment. These services are designed to help students meet expenses while enrolled at Baylor University.

Student Employment

Students may qualify for federal or university work-study positions of 10-20 hours per week, which may involve assignments anywhere within the Mayborn Museum Complex (the Jeanes Discovery Center and the Governor Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village, or the Department of Museum Studies). The types of work may include preparation for special events, education programming, care of collections, and publicity. The tasks assigned are typical of tasks found in all museums and help students experience the complexity and variety of museum work in hands-on situations.

Employment opportunities outside the Department of Museum Studies may be found through the Student Employment website hosted by the Office of Career and Professional Development.

Student Employment

Students also may seek part-time employment in local museums. The Department has contacts with the museums and cultural organizations in the Waco and surrounding area which employ departmental students. This network provides both financial support and direct museum work experience in another institution. Students interested in museum employment should contact the Graduate Program Director or the Department Chair for suggestions.

Graduate Assistantships and Tuition Remission

Graduate students who have been offered full admission to the Museum Studies program may apply for graduate assistantships. The department and its partner institutions offer several graduate assistantships in campus museums, libraries, and archives, and at the Waco Mammoth National Monument. Students work up to 20 hours per week. Stipends are set by the host institution and range from $12 to $22 per hour.

Students may also receive tuition scholarships, which provide tuition remission for up to 9 hours per semester. Please note that tuition scholarships do not cover student fees. Please see Baylor’s Student Financial Services website for more information.

For continuing students, the renewal of any graduate assistantships and/or tuition scholarships is contingent upon the maintenance of an overall grade point average of at least 3.0 in the student's graduate studies and satisfactory performance in the graduate assistantship. Scholarship awards are reviewed each semester and may increase as student performance and the department's budget allow.

Endowed Scholarships

The activities of the Department of Museum Studies and the Mayborn Museum Complex at Baylor University are supported by the Blanche Largent Endowment Fund, the Calvin and Sylvia Smith Scholarship Fund, and the T. Lindsay and Julie Baker Scholarship Fund. Endowed scholarships are credited to the student’s Baylor account and may be used to pay for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses.

Other Scholarships

The Baylor University Graduate School also offers a limited number of scholarships for highly competitive students. Applicants for these scholarships are nominated by the Graduate Program Director and the department's admissions committee.
